Language Arts
Reading – Reading skills are taught using a variety of activities. Students will read using the Journeys reading program, guided reading books, as well as listening to and reading classroom favorites. DIBELS, Fountas & Pinnell, and informal assessments will be used to assess each student’s reading ability and for placement into reading groups. We will also be using elements of the Daily 5 that encompasses Reading to Self, Reading to Someone, Listening, Writing, and Making Words.
Writing – Students will use Kid Writing and the writing skills from the Journeys reading program. To begin the year, students will write about any topic they would like using what they know to write their words and sentences. Adult writing is then written under what the student wrote. We will eventually move away from Kid Writing and write pieces that will take more than one writing session to complete. Students will have many opportunities to publish their writing this year.
Phonics, Spelling, and Grammar– We will be working on many skills for Phonics, Spelling, and Grammar. Some of this work will be taken from the Journeys series and some will be activities from other sources. Some of these skills include vowel and consonant work, word parts such as diagraphs and combinations, word families, nouns, verbs, and adjectives, and ABC order.
Handwriting – Writing Our Catholic Faith will be used for handwriting this year. This curriculum integrates important Catholic words, sentences and prayers.
